How the Pandemic Has Changed Americans’ Cleaning Habits

Plus Our Insights as a Commercial Cleaning Company

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed so much about our lives this past year. We changed how we worked, shopped and what we did for entertainment. We spent more time with our families at home and learned to navigate new ways of doing things in our daily life, like Zoom calls for work instead of in-person meetings and chatting with friends over Facetime instead of meeting for coffee. But another one of those changes has been seen in Americans’ cleaning habits.

What Has Changed about Americans’ Cleaning Habits?

A new study conducted by SC Johnson found that the pandemic has improved Americans’ cleaning habits. According to this survey, half of respondents have adopted new cleaning routines during the pandemic. In fact, the survey found that those cleaning more often averaged an additional two hours of cleaning time compared to their pre-pandemic routines. Part of this new and improved cleaning routine has included paying closer attention to surfaces including door knobs and handles and cleaning in bathrooms and kitchens more often. The even better news is that 54% of respondents said they expect to keep their new and improved cleaning routines.

Our Insights:

Improved cleaning habits are in part because we now spend more time at home than ever before and “germ awareness” is greater than ever. Cleaning helps us psychologically battle Covid and empowers us to create a virus-free safe haven. It also helps us feel like we have some control over our situations. The upside is now people appreciate and value a clean home which ultimately becomes a motivator for honing your cleaning routine in the future.

The Family Dynamic in Cleaning

Beyond general improved and deeper cleaning habits, the study also found that families are now cleaning together more often. Now, 44% of parents are reporting that their children are helping clean more than before the pandemic, which nearly three-quarters of parents say they expect their children to continue those habits after the pandemic.

Our Insights: The pandemic taught families to work together to achieve a common goal: creating a safe and healthy home.  Hopefully these lessons will translate into lifelong habits. Remember, we always need to protect ourselves from common colds, Flu, and viruses.

The Big Data Surprise

One of the biggest surprises this new study found was that Millennials spend more time cleaning than any other age group. Millennials spend an average of 8.2 hours per week cleaning compared to the average of 6 hours per week. Not only that, but Generation Z and Millennials say they enjoy cleaning. Just look at the breakdown:

  • 75% of Millennials
  • 82% of Generation Z
  • 46% of Baby Boomers
  • 40% of Matures

Our Insights: These statistics show that no matter the age, people are dedicated to keeping their environment clean and healthy. Whether kids, young adults, families, or any age this change this significant change in behavior shows a greater emphasis and higher value on cleaning. Perhaps these new and improved habits are here to stay. Maybe it took a pandemic to show us how regular cleaning can make a huge difference in our quality of life.

Our Insights: Beyond the Home

Greater awareness of cleaning habits in our own homes ripples into the workplace as well. As more people are fully vaccinated and return to a “normal life,” businesses and public places will continue to prioritize cleaning and disinfecting.  Trusting and communicating that your business, school, university, medical office, or businesses is a safe and healthy space is key to your success.
Handling all of the cleaning and disinfecting on your own can be difficult and time consuming, and that is where a commercial cleaning service can help. AK Building Services is an experienced and trusted full service commercial cleaning provider. We offer an extensive portfolio and can even help with emergency clean up and disinfecting needs.  Contact us today to learn how we can help keep your space safe, healthy and clean for everyone.

Men of Influence: Mark Cedar

May Edition 2021 | See it at Las Olas Lifestyle Magazine

What single accomplishment are you most proud of, and why?
I am most proud of growing my commercial cleaning company,
AK Building Services, from a small, local business to a mature,
state-wide company. I started my professional career as a CPA in a
cut-throat, corporate environment. Against all odds and advice, I
followed my dream to be my own boss. The leap from corporate cog
to entrepreneur took incredible courage, self-reliance and financial
hardship. I have no regrets and never looked back.

What keeps you up at night?
Owning a commercial cleaning company during the pandemic
is what keeps me up at night, specifically the tremendous
responsibility of keeping our customers and frontline workers
healthy and safe every day. Even with best laid plans, I never know
what tomorrow will bring. The phrases PPE, touch points, kill time,
and disinfecting loop repeatedly in my head. Also, of course the
state of the economy stays heavy on my mind.

Who was your inspiration and role model?
My grandfather “Gramps” was my inspiration and role model.
Gramps instilled in me that there are no limits on what you can
achieve with focus and hard work. He started a small children’s
clothing manufacturer in Montreal and grew it into a global
business. I learned a lot from watching him.

What is the best advice you have ever received? And who gave
you that advice?
A few years ago, my then eight-year-old son was asked a question
in school. His reply: “I may not know the answer, but I am willing
to learn!” The teacher was so taken that she shared his response
with us. So true and impactful, I hung the quote up in my office as a
reminder that no one has all the answers, but it is our willingness to
learn that allows a person to excel in life and business.

WHO’S WHO MEN OF INFLUENCE

4 High-Risk Office Items You Need to Clean Regularly

Keeping your office building in top shape is important. You must invest in the maintenance and repair of the building’s interior and exterior and set rules to ensure that all employees preserve the building. Luckily, this responsibility does not have to fall solely to you or your staff; there are condo building services available to help with cleanliness and sanitation.

Cleanliness is vital to ensure that all your employees are healthy and safe, which is why you need to exert time to keep your common areas sanitized. You also need to determine which areas might have the highest risk of transmission. Such endeavors also teach staff to do their part. To that end, this article will give you a list of the dirtiest places in your office and how often you should clean them:

4 Office Items You Need to Clean Regularly

  1. Office Phones

In most organizations, each employee has a designated desk phone in their cubicle, but what about those areas where more than one person uses the phone? Some offices have a phone in the reception area guests and customers can use, while warehouse employees share one phone since they don’t have dedicated cubicles.

Sharing one phone increases the chance of bacteria spreading from one person to another. These bacteria can lead to infections. Hence, you need to clean your telephone regularly. Wipe down the phone as part of your cleaning routine, or after using the phone, use antibacterial wipes.

  1. Computer Mouse

Most employees working in an office have their own desktop or laptop, with which they use a mouse. People often overlook the mouse when they clean their desks each day.

Truthfully, it houses more bacteria, especially if you don’t clean your hands after eating. This bacteria can build up and increase the chances of an infection. Have employees wipe and sanitize their mice throughout the day, especially if they share the computer with multiple people.

  1. Sink taps

You may be thinking, how can the sink taps not be clean when I use them every day to clean my hands? Well, your hands can be clean, but it doesn’t mean the hands of the people touching the sink taps are clean! A lot of people regularly use the sink in your office building kitchen, so if it’s not cleaned regularly, then germs are going to spread fast. The best way to avoid the spread of germs is to ask your employees to wipe the kitchen tap periodically with soap and warm water.

  1. Photocopier Keypad

The photocopier is a high contact point in any office that has to deal with a lot of paper. Since a lot of people use it each day, germs are likely to multiply in the keypad. After all, not all employees wash their hands before using the copier. Incorporate a copier wipe-down in the steps of copier usage so employees can remain safe.

How Often Should I Clean the Office Building?

Hire a professional office cleaning company to help you clean the office. Tell them the areas that need extra cleaning and the areas commonly used by staff. Set a regular schedule for when they should clean the office and inform the staff of when these dates are.

Final Thoughts

Cleaning your office is important to keep your staff healthy and avoid the spread of diseases. Rules must be incorporated into the company’s routines, and you must include the staff in cleaning efforts. Additionally, hiring professional cleaning services ensures that each area is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

There are many office cleaning services in Fort Lauderdale. AK Building Services is one of them. We offer a comprehensive portfolio of Janitorial and Maintenance Services for Office Buildings, Medical Facilities, Condominiums, Schools, and a wide range of other organizations throughout Dade County, Broward County, Palm Beach County, Martin County, Treasure Coast, and St. Lucie County areas. Daycare Cleaning During COVID-19 [What Has Changed]

COVID-19 has changed everything. The world went from open and free to lockdowns and more stringent regulations. This is especially true for commercial cleaning services. According to custodial workers, there is a growing emphasis on adapting daycare cleaning procedures. This is due to parents going back to work and children going back to educational settings.

If you’re considering implementing new daycare cleaning procedures for your business, know that these changes are probably here to stay. So, it’s best to get started on changing your cleaning procedures. Here are a few ways to update your procedures to the current standard.

Where to Find Information

Before anything else, let’s discuss where to find trustworthy information on how to update your cleaning procedures. Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Caring for Our Children (CFOC) guidelines are good sources. They are maintained by the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care and Early Education. CFOC guidelines have been here since the 90s but have been recently updated to address COVID-19 in child care settings.

For even more information about daycare cleaning during COVID-19, check out the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or the World Health Organization (WHO).

Updated Guidelines

Under the typical pre-pandemic routine, cleaners would come once or twice a day. Besides the usual cleaning of tables and counters, vacuuming, and the like, there would be some specialized attention to cleaning toys, crib surfaces, and beddings.

Now, with COVID-19, it’s almost the same routine, but more thorough. Cleaning schedules are much more detailed, with increased emphasis on disinfecting items. Cleaners now come three or four times a day. There are also approved disinfectants they must use that have been scientifically proven to be effective against COVID-19.

Cleaners and daycare staff have to work harder. The CDC recommends cleaning all surfaces that are touched often throughout the day.

How to Clean Toys and Other Such Objects

The procedure for cleaning toys has changed as well. While wearing gloves, someone (including your daycare professionals) must wash the object with warm water and detergent, rinse, sanitize and disinfect it, rinse again, and air dry. You could also use a mechanical dishwasher to do all of that.

If any items need cleaning that your staff doesn’t plan on cleaning themselves, these should be set aside. These items should be placed in some soapy water that’s labeled “dirty toys” or something similar, and kept out of reach from children. Books don’t need any additional cleaning. However, if you know a book is especially dirty, perhaps throw it out and get a replacement just to be safe.

Conclusion

If you need more advice or perhaps help cleaning your daycare center, check out your local commercial cleaning services. These professionals are highly trained and are up-to-date with the necessary cleaning procedures. Remember to always keep up with the changes and the CDC’s recommendations. Cleaning every establishment thoroughly is a must, but more so during these times when additional cleaning is required to be on the safe side.

The Dirt On Your Flooring [How Its Cleanliness Impacts Your Business]

Consumers, clients, and onlookers alike can immediately judge the credibility of a business based on its looks. Office facilities, medical centers, and other commercial establishments need to set a positive impression if they want to build trust with their target audience; that’s why keeping their surroundings clean is necessary, especially in today’s post-coronavirus world.

Unfortunately, the flooring is one of the most overlooked places in an establishment, despite it receiving the most traffic and abuse. This particular area can trap debris, dust, and dirt, all of which can leave a nasty stain on your reputation when left unattended.

How Does Your Floor’s Cleanliness Directly Impact Your Business?

  1. Dirty Floors Set a Poor First Impression

Appearances matter in all businesses, so imagine inviting curious customers, potential partners, or clients to a facility that looks dingy from floor to ceiling. Walking on dirty floorings can feel icky to the touch too, which shows your company’s lack of regard for cleanliness and health.

Muddy footsteps, unmopped puddles, dull flooring, or an overall worn-down look can compromise your professionalism, especially since unclean conditions can reflect your company’s quality. By putting on a shining curb appeal, you can spark confidence and create a comforting setting.

  1. Dirty Floors Compromises Your Personnel’s Health

Soiled floors not only look unsightly, but they can also impact your personnel’s health since the ground will be rife with germs and disease-causing bacteria. It also encourages other contaminants to thrive in an unsanitary environment, increasing the sick leaves in your workplace and even bringing down employee morale.

This is called the “sick building syndrome,” which happens when all the unattended grime all over the place increases the chances of spreading illnesses. Having “sick building syndrome” can put a bottleneck on your productivity and compromise your bottom line.

On the other hand, a clean floor can make your establishment feel refreshing and inspiring, both of which are necessary to keep everyone happy while working for nine-to-five.

  1. Dirty Floors Reduces Surface Lifespans

Just like many things, your flooring will need regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure it looks good as new for years to come. Letting it collect dust and dander can create friction, which can hurt the surfaces over time and cause it to lose its lackluster appearance. Failing to address this will not only make your building look old and unattractive, but it can even get rid of the protective finish of your flooring and reduce its overall lifespan.

The Bottom Line: How Dirty Floors Can Hurt Your Business in More Ways Than One

Keeping your floors in mint condition may seem unnecessary compared to other responsibilities on your plate, but as a business owner, you should know that all it takes is one smudge to hurt your business. That’s why it’s always worth investing in professional janitorial services that can ensure your business looks and functions to its full potential!

Our Guide to Condo Cleaning Services [What You Need to Know]

Living in a condominium may be compared to living in a tiny, compressed house, but the maintenance involved is remarkably different. At some point, you may find that hiring a house cleaning service may not work as well as condo cleaning services, as there are nuances that are distinct enough to require specialized cleaning.

For instance, house cleaners know that they’ll only be dealing with you and your household. Still, condo cleaners must deal with your concierge and other potential administrative paperwork to get the clearance to perform their service in your condo. Given these differences, you may be wondering the right way to clean your living space and the importance of hiring condo-specific cleaners. Here’s what you need to know:

How Condo Cleaning Services Help

Condominiums have important differences from houses that require specialized knowledge. For instance, condos have ceiling vents to accommodate washer-dryer units, which can quickly turn into fire hazards if they aren’t cleaned and maintained. House cleaners won’t know about these or clean them properly, which will put the condo at risk. However, cleaning services for condos will have the right equipment and skills to eliminate the fire hazards and clean your unit correctly.

Condo-specific cleaning companies also have much more affordable pricing because they’re tailored to smaller spaces, unlike house-specific cleaners. They also know how to deal with your building’s concierge and residents respectfully, which will prevent you from getting complaints about potentially unprofessional behavior. Many companies also offer free quotes online, allowing you to find out how much the service will cost beforehand.

Preparing for Condo Cleaners to Arrive

Although it is a cleaning service’s job to tidy up your condo and make everything look spic and span, it is best to organize your condo a bit to make their job easier. For instance, put away loose items, pick off all garbage from surfaces, and clean up clothing or other items left on the ground. That way, the cleaning service can focus on sanitizing your space instead of picking your belongings up from the floor.

Fortunately, you don’t have to worry about supplying them with cleaning products or equipment, because they’ll arrive with their own particular set. However, if you have allergic reactions to many off-the-shelf cleaning products and prefer the cleaning service to use your own, they will be happy to oblige.

You’ll also want to communicate openly with the cleaners to make sure everything will go smoothly, as they’ll be actively informing you of any important details or developments. For instance, if you’re supposed to meet them at the lobby, but you’re running late from an errand, make sure to inform them. They will know when to expect your arrival and get started on cleaning.

What to Look for in a Cleaning Company

There are many cleaning companies in Florida that you can try, but you’ll definitely want to go to the best. For starters, ensure that the company’s cleaners are well-trained and rigorously practice safety precautions, especially during the pandemic. The company must also have insurance and coverage for all the employees. Smooth, open communication is also essential, as they’ll be cleaning your living space, and you want to make sure that they’re trustworthy.

Conclusion

It takes a lot of effort and resources to maintain your condo and make sure it is properly cleaned, especially when you have a hectic work schedule, and you look forward to winding down during the weekend. Fortunately, by hiring a cleaning company in South Florida, you can enjoy a sparkling clean condo and have the service done at your convenience.

5 Myths About Cleaning and Disinfecting, Busted by the Experts

If the past year has taught us anything, it’s the importance of cleaning and disinfecting. But there is a lot of information out there and not all of it is factual, and that can lead to the surfaces in your business, school or home not being as clean as you think they are. So we’re here to bust some cleaning myths.

1 | Myth: Sanitizing is the Same as Disinfecting

Many people use the term clean, sanitize and disinfect synonymously. However, there are some key differences to the terms. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), cleaning is a process that removes visible dirt, dust and debris. Sanitizing mitigates the risk of illness by reducing some of the bacteria identified on a product’s label. And disinfecting kills most bacteria and viruses identified on a product’s label. Disinfecting surfaces is the most thorough solution to keeping your space healthy and truly clean.

2 | Myth: All Cleaning Products Disinfect

Not all cleaning products are equal. Only products labeled as approved disinfectants can disinfect, so be sure to read the fine print on labels closely. Another good tip is to check for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registration number on the label. Type that number into the agency’s database for specifics.

3 | Myth: Plant-Based Cleaners Don’t Work

Many people like plant-based cleaners because they don’t leave behind a strong chemical smell and are more eco-friendly. When used properly, plant-based products can be just as effective as chemical-based cleaners. Again, not all products are created equally, so be sure to do your homework and look for plant-based cleaners that are approved by the EPA and follow package instructions closely.

4 | Myth: Disinfectants Work Instantly

Time is key when it comes to properly disinfecting. No matter the product you choose, be sure to always check the label for how long hard, non-porous surfaces must stay wet for them to be the most effective at killing germs. You may need to saturate a surface for several minutes to actually kill germs.

5 | Myth: It’s Not Worth It to Hire a Commercial Cleaning Company

Professional commercial cleaning companies know their stuff. Their experts are trained in the proper use of cleaning and disinfecting techniques to ensure that your space is healthy for everyone. Often, the specialized equipment used to clean all the surfaces in a building can be expensive to both purchase and maintain. However, commercial cleaning services already have this equipment and keep it maintained. One such specialized piece of equipment is the electrostatic sprayer, which can effectively disinfect even the most sensitive surfaces like electronic equipment and labs as well as soft surfaces. Professional cleaning companies are also there when you need them, with the ability to help you clean up in emergencies, such as after accidents or storms.

If you are ready to hire an experienced and trusted commercial cleaning provider, AK Building Services has a comprehensive portfolio of janitorial and maintenance services for office buildings, medical facilities, condominiums, schools and more. We offer the ability to customize your cleaning services as well as be there for you in an emergency. The Importance of High-Quality Cleaning Solutions for Hospitals

Managing a business in the healthcare industry requires you to pay closer attention to your cleaning procedures because it affects the welfare of everyone involved, from patients to healthcare workers. When it comes to sanitizing the entire building, you will need to guarantee you’re initiating high-quality cleaning procedures at all times.

If you’re currently facing financial struggles and need to cut back on your budget, you should still live up to the proper standards of cleanliness. When you can’t hire a cleaning company due to a lack of funds, the least you can do is appoint your cleaning employees to accomplish their job.

You must have a reliable workforce with the knowledge and experience to know what cleaning equipment and products to use for your hospital to avoid low-quality cleaning methods and results. Keep reading below to find out the reasons to work towards high-quality solutions for the betterment of your medical facility.

It Prevents Infections and Diseases

When you fail to improve your cleaning solutions for your hospital, you are at risk of developing hospital-acquired infections (HIA) outbreaks, which consist of deadly diseases, such as C. Difficile and MRSA. HIAs usually happen when you receive a patient to address their health issue through treatment or surgery, and they end up contracting a new disease during their stay in the hospital.

Patients diagnosed with C. Difficile or MRSA will be quite difficult to treat because the diseases tend to be highly resistant to drugs. When other patients find out about the situation, and they initially wanted to receive healthcare in your hospital, there’s a huge chance they could change their mind after realizing they may be in danger too!

As much as possible, hiring a commercial cleaning company to perform high-quality cleaning solutions is integral to eliminate bacteria and germs from causing unwanted health risks. They are the professionals who know just what to do to prevent the occurrence of such infectious diseases.

It Involves Cutting-Edge Technology

Due to the evolution of modern technology, hospitals and healthcare facilities are fortunate enough to benefit from the improvements, from acquiring cutting-edge tools and cleaning methods.

With each patient that comes and goes into your establishment and stays in a room for a couple of days, you must learn to sanitize it once they leave to make way for the next patient. Once janitorial companies are done with their tasks, you can operate the devices that produce UV light and destroy any germs that weren’t taken care of during the first part of cleaning.

Such innovations offer convenience unlike no other because they usually only take up to twenty minutes to finish the job! If you want to promise your patients high-quality cleaning solutions, these are an investment worth noting due to their valuable features.

It Eliminates HIAs from Occurring

When you get commercial cleaning services to perform high-quality cleaning methods, you have to be clear about what you want to happen, including laying down the areas they must tackle.

It’s not enough to constantly mop the floors, wipe surfaces, and other parts of the hospital. The medical equipment and other high-traffic objects should also be included because they go through numerous hands in a day, including door handles, countertops, and handrails. If you’re worried about cross-contamination, high-quality cleaning solutions should involve sanitizing a patient’s room more than once.

Conclusion

Investing in the cleanliness of your hospital is necessary because people’s lives are on the line if you fail to do your job to keep them safe. Through high-quality cleaning solutions, you can rest assured knowing that they can prevent infections and diseases and help eliminate HIAs from occurring. When you have the right cleaning team to initiate the duties, you don’t have to worry about your patients and workers contracting unwanted illnesses.

  • Human resource: The first aspect you must consider is the cleaning company’s human resource, meaning their professional cleaners. As much as possible, you want to ensure that they have undergone proper training, gotten certification, and acquired insurance.

  • Quality system and service delivery: You also have to consider the company’s cleaning system and service delivery, which include their cleaning schedule, duration, and frequency. Be sure that they have consistent cleaning processes in place and offer only quality cleaning services.

  • Cleaning tools, solutions, and supplies: Check to see what tools, solutions, and supplies they are using to ensure that they are non-toxic and safe for your patients and employees.

  • Health, safety, and environmental compliance: A top consideration is how compliant your hired cleaning company is. Make sure that they adhere to regulatory requirements set forth by the government for medical facilities.

Conclusion

Is Your Office Covid Clean? Want Employees Back to Work?

February 2nd, 2021 | Posted on Lifestyle Media Group

Cleaning Companies are the hidden heroes.

Nobody likes dealing with the cleaning company, and until COVID hit you probably did not care who was scrubbing your toilet.  If you still do not care, you should.

As the virus continues to thrive, every day is a tireless battle to keep your employees, customers and clients safe and back to work. Hiring a professional cleaning company for your workplace could make the difference between a healthy space or a health hazard.  Sure, hiring a friend’s cousin to clean is less expensive, but as the expression goes “you get what you pay for.”  Enhanced cleaning protocols are essential for safely running a business, and if you are not advertising that to your customers you are still living in 2019.

Here are a few tips from AK Building Services on why you should hire a professional cleaning company:

Fabuloso smells good, but it does not get the job done. Cleaning and disinfecting with the right products are half the battle when killing viruses, germs, and bacteria. Janitorial companies have access to commercial grade cleaning products, which are more powerful and cost-effective.

Would you rather work in a clean, healthy space or a dirty one?  You know the answer.  Starting your day fresh and clean not only makes you feel better and more productive, but also lets you breathe easier knowing that the bathroom door handle is not teeming with viral muck.

What happens if your cleaner cannot clean?  It means overflowing trash and sticky faucets.  With a professional company there is always a back-up team; you are never left in the lurch.  Imagine a customer or client walking into a dirty office. What does that say about you and your business?

On the job injury. Unfortunately, it could happen, and with an uninsured cleaner that’s on you.  With a fully licensed, insured company you are protected.

Be a hero and call AK Building Services for your company’s cleaning needs.
