Seasonal Cleaning Tips for Office Buildings

Seasons come and seasons go. We often associate cleaning with the usual “spring cleaning.” However, staying clean and healthy requires a year-round approach.
Each season brings unique tasks to focus on for keeping office buildings clean and healthy for everyone. Here are our tips for seasonal cleaning of your office buildings.

Seasonal Cleaning Tasks that Keep Your Office Healthy and Productive!

Spring

Spring is the perfect opportunity to revitalize your office after a long winter. Focus on decluttering and organizing to enhance productivity. But this is also a good time to do an annual deep cleaning. This can include:

  • Deep cleaning your carpets
  • Doing an upholstery and fabric refresh (e.g. sofas and drapes)
  • Deep cleaning and waxing hard floors
  • Deep cleaning air vents and ducts
  • Deep cleaning and maintenance of windows, including the glass, sills, and blinds or solar shades
  • Dust under heavy furniture that doesn’t get moved as often
  • Dust light fixtures and crown moulding

With Earth Day approaching, consider implementing eco-friendly cleaning practices. These are better for the environment and individuals with sensitivities or allergies.
Harsh chemical cleaning solutions can trigger allergies, so eco-friendly options are a safer alternative for everyone.

Summer

The summer is a good time to focus on often-forgotten areas. These include break rooms and kitchen areas. A deep clean of these areas can cut down on bacteria and virus growth. This helps maintain a healthier work environment. It’s a good time to remind employees to clean up after themselves. Encourage them to throw out expired items in the office fridge.

With spring allergies now in full swing, summer is a great time to change HVAC filters again. This helps improve indoor air quality. Adding natural plants to the office is another way to improve air quality. Plants naturally filter the air and create an inviting workspace.
If you already have plants, summer is a good time to trim struggling vines and clean up dead leaves.
Dust the green leaves to ensure your plants thrive during the season.

If you have outdoor spaces, such as a courtyard or patio, keep them clean and well-maintained.
Sweep away debris regularly and empty trash receptacles to keep the area tidy.

Autumn

As the weather begins to cool off, illnesses begin to heat up. To prevent the spread of the cold and flu, the fall season is a good time to amp up your cleaning of high-traffic areas and hot spots with additional sanitizing efforts. This includes door handles, bannisters, elevator buttons, escalator rails, toilet doors, flush handles, and more. You might also consider installing hand sanitizer dispensers in high-traffic areas to encourage people to keep their hands clean as they walk by.

The autumn season can also bring an invasion of leaves, debris, and wet footprints from cooler weather. Keep your entrances and exits clean by revving up your cleaning efforts in these areas. Be sure to have extra door mats on hand for wet days to prevent slips and falls, and clear up any debris quickly.

Summer months bring a lot of humidity and this can lead to moisture buildup in areas that are often overlooked. The fall is a great time to check for mold in warm places such as furnace rooms and high-traffic and water areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. Cutting back on mold growth can cut back on sick days due to exposure.

Winter

Cold and flu season is still roaring so continue your ramped up efforts of hotspot cleaning and sanitizing. Disinfecting daily can help keep the spread of germs and illness down, helping your employees stay healthy and productive!

Winter can do a number on your windows so it’s a good idea to consider some additional window cleaning sessions to get rid of the grime. In colder climates, it may not be possible to clean the exterior of your windows during this season, but keeping up with cleaning the inside of your windows during the colder months can help you get ahead of your spring cleaning.

Dust can really build up during the colder months as we tend to keep windows closed more often. Make sure to dust your window sills, baseboards, ledges, and other areas with grooves and a high level of grime buildup throughout the year.

And finally, continue to pay extra attention to your entryway and exits with additional cleaning as needed due to weather.
